Patrick James with his nine children c. 1893.
William (b. 1879) and Helena (b. 1881) are at the back. The toddler on his lap would be Kathleen (b. 1893) the youngest. It is hard to know which the other children are Raymond (b. 1883), John (b. 1885), Maggie (b. 1887), Nell and Edward (b. 1890), Reg (b. 1891). This photo would have been taken the year of, or soon after Mary passed away.
My mother is sure that Patrick and Mary had 13 children however there are only 12 recorded and all were born in New Zealand, the first James was born a year after their arrival into New Zealand. The New Zealand Births, Deaths and Marriages site have recorded the first three children, boys, as passing in infancy. It must have been very tough for a young Mary, barely in her 20's, to lose her first three babies. It is also believed that the last child born, Kathleen was a twin, one of which died either in child birth or soon after. Over 17 years, between 1876 and 1893 Mary had 11 pregnancies (two sets of twins).
Baby Souls
Between 1878 when John Louis passed and 1881 when William Patrick was born, Mary had no recorded children.
