Mary's father, William Murphy, was a coach driver and labourer who passed away in 1855 in Ireland.
Mary's mother is referred to as Bridget Raymond. She passed away on 15th February 1892 in Ireland. There were two main groups of Raymond's in Listowel at the time. The wealthy and prestigious landowning Raymond's of Dromin House who were Church of England, and the working class Roman Catholic Raymond's. Given her children's religions it seems likely Bridget belonged to the latter group.
All three of Bridget and William's children were born in Bedford, Listowel and migrated to New Zealand from 1874. Mary was first, followed by Bridget and John.
